February 11th .2014 Tuesday
Today, we learned thesis statement and practiced with the poem “we spent the fourth of July in bed”, by Suheir Hamad.
Basically, a thesis statement is a single, provable statement.
We answered the short and large questions to get deeper understanding of poem, and analyzed poem with contrast points.
February 12th .2014 Wednesday
Today’s task was to write a strong proper thesis statement.
A thesis statement has 4 significant characteristics:
1. A strong thesis takes some sort of stand. Remember that your thesis needs to show your conclusion about a subject.
2. A strong thesis justifies discussion. Your thesis should indicate the point of the discussion, and arguable.
3. A strong thesis expresses one main idea. Do not try to prove many ideas in your statement. It will confuse you and reader.
4. A strong thesis statement is specific to show exactly what your paper will be about.
February 13th .2014 Thursday
Today, we judged each other’s thesis statement of the poem “we spent the fourth of July in bed”, by Suheir Hamad.
We found some good thesis, and analyzed reasons. We adjusted some thesis by making more specific, focus on one main idea, and avoid to only expressing a general message from text. Then, we pointed out some thesis that we don’t understand, but still have chance to make sense.
All these practices brought a clear method of writing a good thesis.
Mr. Sultan also gave feedbacks to all of our thesis.
February 14th .2014 Friday
Blending learning: peer criticizes thesis statement and provide with 3 evidences from poem.
Today, Mr. Sultan met up with all groups to analyze each of our thesis statement, and gave suggestions of supporting arguments.
Again, thesis statements only maintain one main idea. This main idea should be arguable. For the argument part, you must find evidences based on text. If you express with reason and how you feel from your own perspective will better.
Reminder: Monday, February 17th, we will have the first test “music video response essay”
Good luck everybody.
