Today all of us sat in groups to discuss about the video presentations that we have done. It was the presentation that we submitted on Sunday for the literary theme – Reason vs. Belief. We watched our group members’ videos on Sunday night and prepared for a discussion on Monday. We discussed about the argumentative points and asked further questions on each of our presentations.
Tuesday, 11 March 2014
We started looking at psychological lens today. We learned about Transformation of Significance which consists of preservation, reconstruction, revaluation and recreation.
Preservation : keep going without making any changes
Reconstruction : change the means to get what you want
Revaluation : change the way you see things
Recreation : transform what you do and transform what matters to you
We also discussed whether religion is a positive or negative coping mechanism with our group members. Then, each group’s representative shared our opinions with the class.
Wednesday, 12 March 2014
We went through Transformation of Significance today. Then, we started giving our answers individually on the question “Is religion supportive or a hindrance to Pi in Part 2 of Life of Pi?”. After that, we played Charades to identify which terms belong to Id, Ego or Superego.
Thursday, 13 March 2014
We looked into the meaning of Id, Ego and Superego today.
Id : It means doing whatever you want without being rational. For example, id makes you do drugs, consume alcohol or being violent.
Ego : Your ego helps you to be rational. It helps you to judge what is right or wrong, have self-control and have manners.
Superego : Overly controlling or concerned. Your superego makes you judge things critically and being the authority.
After learning the meaning of these terms, we played Charades again to classify some words into either id, ego or superego.
Friday, 14 March 2014
There is no meet-up session for today’s blended learning, our homework is to complete the single argument essay. It is the single argument statement setup to apply religious criticism to for Life of Pi.

This week, we learned about the importance of balancing and supporting between reason and belief. For example of these two factors contradicting with each other is that it clouds an individuals decisions and so a perfect example would be the recent MH370 incident where the airline has lost contact with MAS which resulted in families and friends panicking for the lost of their family members or friends, they all resulted to either relying on reason or belief to get through this crisis. Some of the family members or friends “believe” that their families or friends are safe and must have somehow just lost contact that is all, this coping mechanism is more to believe which is when individuals believe something to allow them to gain motivation or at least some kind of thinking which allows them to get through this crisis. While the other coping mechanism which is reason would be different as individuals would make assumptions based on general reasoning that seems to work on almost anybody which helps in coping with the crisis at hand. However, they never give up and pray that the lost family member will return. This contrast to Pi's life when he was on the boat with Richard Parker. Pi was frightning for his life during the time when he was on the boat by using the coping mechanism, which are consisted of reasoning with himself or believing in religion to guide him and keep him alive.
